Cons • Less cash available – You don't receive the dividend as spending money. • Can buy at high prices – Reinvesting when shares are expensive. • May reduce diversification – More invested in the same company or fund. The new CGT indexation effect with dividend reinvestment from 1/7/27: • Each reinvested dividend creates a new share parcel with its own cost base. • Each parcel will have a different indexation period because it was acquired on a different date. • This makes CGT calculations more complicated, because you may need to calculate the indexed cost base separately for each reinvestment. Simple example: You buy shares in & reinvest bi-annual dividends for 2026, 2027 & 2028. You now have 6 acquisition dates and potentially 6 different cost bases/indexation calculations when you eventually sell. Critics of high excise increases argue: Making legal tobacco extremely expensive created the opportunity for criminals to supply cheaper alternatives. Public health advocates argue: The tax policy successfully reduced smoking, and the problem is that criminal networks exploited demand that remains. "These numbers put it in the starkest terms possible," said James Martin, a Deakin University criminologist who described the findings as "absolutely staggering". "It's simply not possible to enforce your way out of a mess of this size." So, let’s talk about 62.9% tax on trust to company distributions and some 80% taxes on capital gains, too high? Lets get excited about accepting the reality and maximising our outcomes. Black Swans are real: • A share market crash is considered inevitable over time, so investors should prepare in advance rather than try to predict it. Past crashes (GFC, COVID) showed losses can be severe and sudden. • The main risk is being forced to sell assets during a downturn, especially for retirees who rely on investments for income (“sequencing risk”). • Defensive planning focuses on ensuring liquidity and stability so you can ride out downturns without panic selling. Key strategies: • Bucket strategy (cash buffer approach) Keep 1–2 years of living expenses in cash, plus additional funds in defensive assets like term deposits and bonds. Younger investors may treat this as an “opportunity fund” to buy assets after a drop. • Maximising cash / term deposits Use high-interest cash accounts and “laddered” term deposits to generate steady income over different time periods, reducing reliance on selling shares. • Turn off dividend reinvestment plans (DRPs) Instead of automatically reinvesting dividends, take the cash to improve liquidity during uncertain markets. • Put options / defensive ETFs More advanced investors can hedge by using put options or “bear ETFs” that rise when markets fall, though these come with ongoing costs and complexity. • Diversification Spreading investments across sectors (shares, bonds, gold, emerging markets, etc.) helps reduce the impact of any single market crash and smooth returns over time. Gaslighting Our Youth? If it was about housing why wasn’t the tax attack limited just to housing? Higher taxes will apply to property and shares and just about any other asset held by everyday investors. There is also a sting in the tail with a 30 per cent minimum rate to ensure nobody escapes and bracket creep was acknowledged but ultimately just ignored. Investors should have known after the super tax saga where earnings in super on amounts over $3m taxes doubled that Chalmers had an agenda and outright lies were part of that. How you can still get ahead For property investors the most tax-effective rewards will now be in squeezing higher rents over seeking capital gain. Similarly, investors in the share market will find the rewards are more often found among high dividend paying stocks rather than expansionist or innovative listed growth companies. As for the family trust changes, this could be a major revenue earner for the government, but it is going to create an uproar across the market and a boom for accountants undergoing restructures – the greatest change since GST Negative gearing is not dead It is just kaput for residential properties unless you buy a brand-new property. Expect a boom in the value of commercial properties and farms etc which can still be negatively geared into the future. Geared share portfolios producing a cashflow loss will operate under the old rules, allowing negative gearing and claiming the tax break. High-income earners who still wish to own residential investment property may refocus their strategy and look to purchase cashflow neutral or even positive cashflow assets, since the negative gearing strategy will no longer apply. We may see a rise in the price of properties that can generate higher than average rental income as this will become more sought after in the new tax landscape. The good news for existing owners of residential investment properties is you can continue to negatively gear existing residential investment property under grandfathering rules. Value adds - If you have a freestanding residential investment property and could build a granny flat to produce a secondary income or if you have an apartment as an investment that could be decked out in furniture and on Airbnb or if your property could do with a renovation that could then boost the rental income, look at doing these things. Capital gains tax The inflation method back from July 1, 2027, for ALL assets purchased after this date. We may see a surge in self-managed super funds created as people look to purchase property within superannuation due to the ability to sell in the accumulation phase with only a zero,10 or 15 per cent capital gains tax depending on whether the property has been held for more than 12 months. Family trusts The typical strategy to stream family trust (not fixed trusts) income to the lower income spouse and children over 18 will end on July 1, 2028, with the introduction of a 30 per cent minimum tax on distributions from discretionary family trusts. Business owners who keep their existing discretionary family trust, paying themselves and employing family members so the trust has less profit taxed at 30 per cent might be the go. Converting from a family trust to a family investment company is also a consideration given the company’s ability to pay fully franked dividends to shareholders including low-income shareholders who receive a tax refund for the excess franking credits. Leave the country And if this is all becoming too much, consider how a new life might look in a tax-free location like Dubai, or closer to home in New Zealand, which does not have a capital gains tax system except for properties sold within two years of acquisition. Get Stuffed (The Pushback) One Nation and the lies fallout and all that said, everything still depends on how the draft legislation looks and any amendments through parliaments to get the final position on the new tax rules, rollover relief, grandfathering and all the finer details…….
